Thomas Tuchel opens up on Chelsea “priority” amid Cristiano Ronaldo links

Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo is still yet to report back for pre-season training after rocking the Manchester United hierarchy with a transfer request last month

Thomas Tuchel has not ruled out signing another forward in the transfer window

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has opened up on the club’s priorities in the summer window amid talk of an ambitious plot to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

New owner Todd Boehly has already shown his intent in the transfer market. The Blues completed the £50million arrival of former Manchester City ace Raheem Sterling on Wednesday (July 13) and have also agreed a deal for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegal captain arrived in London last night and will now undergo medical examinations ahead of a £33.8m switch and the Blues are not expected to halt their summer spending spree there. Boehly has held talks with agent Jorge Mendes over the possibility of signing wantaway forward Ronaldo with the American eyeing a marquee signing to start off his tenure.

However, Tuchel is eager to avoid a Romelu Lukaku-esque signing and upset the harmony of the dressing room and has admitted any move for Ronaldo is currently on the back-burner.

“I would not rule it out [signing another striker] but right now it is not the priority,” Tuchel told Sky Sports. “The priority right now is defence, it’s not a secret. From there we need to see what’s possible.

“We’re competing against the two top teams but Tottenham did a very active and aggressive and early transfer period, they have maybe the strongest squad they ever had with one of the best coaches in the world. Man Utd are never shy of recruiting with a new coach and Arsenal had some big signings already so we need to keep the level up to be competitive.”

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to play Champions League football next term

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, 37, is desperate to leave Manchester United this summer after missing out on Champions League football. Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford last summer with the hope of helping United battle for the Premier League title but the Red Devils stumbled to their worst ever finish since the division was reformed in 1992.

Despite bagging 18 goals as United’s top scorer, the Portuguese icon is now adamant he wants out and is still yet to report back for pre-season training, citing family issues.

Todd Boehly is spearheading an ambitious move for Cristiano Ronaldo

Super-agent Mendes is now on the scene, having spoken to Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea about a possible switch, but Ronaldo’s eyewatering £510k-a-week wages are proving to be a stumbling block.

Barcelona have categorically told Mendes they cannot afford his inflated salary and are prioritising a move for Robert Lewandowski. Whereas Bayern would only entertain a deal should their star man leave Bavaria. Boehly remains keen on pursuing a move for the Portuguese sensation but boss Tuchel remains unconvinced.
